Thiago Silva era at PSG ends on Sunday evening. For the Paris captain, it will be the last game in the PSG shirt. The 35-year-old’s expiring contract will not be extended. Most recently it was said that the Brazilian was moving to Florence – instead, London seems to be his preferred destination.
On Thursday, Corriere dello Sport reported that Thiago Silva was about to return to Serie A and would be hiring at Ribery club Fiorentina. The next day a new rumor arises – according to this, the Brazilian central defender, who will face Bayern with PSG in the Champions League final on Sunday evening, is in advanced negotiations with Chelsea !
Unlike the rumor of the Italian newspaper, the report from the renowned sports magazine The Athletic sounds more credible. Editor Liam Twoney claims to have found out that the Blues came across the 35-year-old while looking for a central defender. Thiago Silva will leave Paris after the Champions League final after eight years and could therefore change for free. The expiring contract of the PSG captain was not extended.
Chelsea and Thiago Silva still have a few points to clarify
However, the deal is still far from being finalized. Some points still need to be clarified – such as the length of the contract. In September, the 88-time Brazilian international will be 36 years old. It is clear that Thiago Silva would be a short-term and very experienced addition to the young Chelsea team under coach Frank Lampard.
At Stamford Bridge, there is also a rule imposed by the club, according to which players over 30 years should only get one-year contracts. But here, too, the Chelsea leadership is obviously ready to compromise: David Luiz signed for two years before he was sold to Arsenal. Willian was also offered a two-year deal, but the Brazilian decided to move to the Gunners.
Thiago Silva will not start thinking about his sporting future until Monday. The Premier League has always appealed to the Brazilian after playing for Milan and PSG for many years. And even at his advanced age, he is still convinced that he can perform at the highest level.
Rethinking at PSG? Chelsea has other candidates in mind
The PSG bosses had decided against a new contract for their defense chief. However, The Athletic continues, this decision is not irrevocable. Should Thiago Silva tear the handle pot into the Lisbon night sky on Sunday evening, it could lead to a rethink.
In addition to Thiago Silva, Chelsea also has other candidates in mind for the defense. Above all, Declan Rice should be Frank Lampard’s dream player for the defensive. The West Ham United defender would be very expensive though – Hammers coach David Moyes recently said it would take money from the Bank of England to get Rice loose. In view of the smoldering Havertz transfer, this money would probably no longer exist.
Lewis Dunk from Brighton would be another alternative. According to reports, the 28-year-old should leave if a top 6 club knocks. But then only at a hefty price: Almost 56 million euros are called as a transfer fee.
Thiago Silva and Chelsea: a win-win situation
And so a transfer from Thiago Silva makes three-fold sense from a Blues point of view: The Brazilian is free of charge, would be an immediate reinforcement and brings experience to the team and the Blues can focus their remaining financial resources on a Havertz transfer this summer. Now Thiago Silva just has to play …
